The organisation

SUVIO was founded in 2007 with the support of the Islamic College Foundation in Schiedam to meet the urgent needs of Islamic schools, Muslim parents and their children. At that time, there was a serious lack of suitable reading and teaching materials that met the pedagogical, didactic and educational quality requirements that Islamic education sets for its teaching materials.

History

The first children's book that appeared on the market from SUVIO in 2007, Wonders of Allah's Creation, is still a bestseller and is used in various groups as a supplement to nature education lessons. Wonders of Allah's Creation is also very popular within homeschooling or as reading material.

A coloring booklet 'Children's Stories from the Qur'an' was published for the toddlers, with Creation as the theme. In the same year, the lesson booklet 'I learn to read the Qur'an' was published, the first method for children in which they can learn to read the Qur'an under guidance with Dutch explanations.

In addition to books, SUVIO also develops educational game materials to increase learning fun. After almost 10 years, the six-part Islam Quiz is still a great success as an Eid gift or during theme meetings or women's days.

In the following two years, the teacher's manuals entitled 'Ramadan and Idul Fitr' and 'Hajj and Idul Adha' were developed, a supplement approved by CITO itself to the well-known VVE method 'Piramide' for the lower grades.

In addition to the method, two CDs with Islamic children's songs on the same themes were also published. These are now also available as a download version via the SUVIO webshop.

Due to the great need for Islamic children's books that focused on certain values and associated behavior, SUVIO decided in 2009 to enter into negotiations with the then British publisher 'The Islamic Foundation' about the copyrights of the well-known Dutch-language series 'Hilmy the Hippo', 'Nordin het Nijlpaard' in Dutch. This resulted in the appearance on the market of the Hilmy the Hippo series, the popular hippo that almost every Muslim child is now familiar with.

Some picture books about Ramadan and Eid al Fitr for beginning readers, 'Is it time yet?' and 'I learn about Eid al Fitr' followed.

By popular request, SUVIO published the Guides for Muslim Boys and Girls in 2010, which, from an Islamic religious perspective, paid attention to issues that Muslim children are confronted with during puberty, such as their changing bodies, feelings and living environment.

The first two volumes of the Islamic history method, 'The History of the Life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)' and 'The Islamic History of Europe', were published between 2010 and 2015. Both books were regularly the subject of the well-known National Islam Knowledge Quiz of the ISBO, in which groups 8 of the Dutch Islamic primary schools competed for the coveted main prize, an Umrah to Mecca.

In 2018, the first part of the series 'Heroes from Islamic History', 'Salaheddine the Conqueror', was published. In 2019, the colorfully illustrated, six-part series 'I can go anywhere' was published.

Work is currently underway to expand the history method and a religion method for home and mosque education.

Chairman

Asma Claassen

Asma Claassen was born in Haarlem in 1968. In 1988 she converted to Islam. Since then she has been committed to everything that has anything to do with Islam, education, identity or society.

After obtaining her high school diploma, she studied Russian and Arabic at the RUL.

After this, she followed various halaqaat for 14 years and passed on the knowledge she acquired about tarbiya Islamiyyah and tajweed to many other students, especially first generation Dutch Muslims.

In 1997, together with several other pioneers, she founded the first Islamic toddler group with Dutch as the main language (Ababil). She then worked for 11 years as a (religious) teacher and identity coordinator at two Islamic primary schools in Schiedam.

In 2004 she obtained her PABO diploma and also a number of certificates in the field of Starting Blocks Basic Development and Pyramid, several VVE projects.

During her work in Islamic primary schools, she noticed the lack of Islamic children's books and teaching materials. To fill that gap, she started writing several educational Islamic children's books for use at school and beyond.

In 2005, when the number of books started to reach a considerable size, she decided together with some colleagues to set up her own Foundation, Publisher for Islamic Education, suvio.nl, for which she developed, among other things, the Islamic History method.
